“The English were glad to see them.." (on going..)

"Certainly the Portuguese merchants were already in many cases wealthy and important. When they came to his dominions in Gascony, probably in quest of wine, Henry III. of England was glad to deal with them himself, and did not hesitate to borrow large sums of money from them on occasion."

The Treaty of Windsor, the oldest alliance in history, was signed on 9th May 1386. Portugal and England tied this political knot through the marriage of Philippa of Lancaster with King João I of Portugal. The constant travel between the two countries from then on became a common occurrence where strong business empires such as glass manufacture and port wine trading grew and flourished.

This important relationship of six centuries has seen its fair share of problems and indeed had its challenging times especially in the late 18th century and during WW2. However, this strong partnership with the exchange of people and ideas continued through the economic and political links of the European Union. Even with UK leaving the Union there are more than 250.000 Portuguese men and women living, working and studying in UK. They retain positions in many areas including architecture, medicine, sport and education.

When migrant workers to UK are often vilified and given a bad press in certain sectors of the British media this established and continued relationship of over 600 years exemplifies the importance of mutual co-operation, respect and the exchange of skills and ideas.

Early 2017 I've left home behind moving abroad, almost 2 years later my grandad passed away, the way I found to deal with the grief was to photograph what was left behind. With this I've started to document what represents home for me in the rare occasions I'm back. Photographing my family and our activities.

The People's Market (2019)

The People's Market was an site specific exhibition held during April 2019 at Jacky White's Market in Sunderland, UK. During 3 months I had the chance to met and photograph the people that work in the market. I was focused on their daily chores and relationships between them and costumers. This project culminated in an exhibition that took place inside the market, as canvas for the photos I've used objects that already existed in the market. A virtual tour of the market was displayed in the entrance of the market, the virtual tour consisted in a walk that I've done inside the market, showing a normal morning in the same (check video tab to see it).

Vale de Poios is the meca of rock climbing in Portugal. I'm lucky enough as there was my 'climbing school'. This is my documentation on that climbing crag, usually I go there with friends, but the climbing spot is visited by many. I've meet many new people there and made new friends.

At the end of the 21st century, planet Earth’s ecosystems were on the verge of collapse. In response a Galactic Nations crew of brave interstellar cosmonauts journeyed into deep space on an explorative mission - searching for an alien world capable of sustaining human life. Known as the ‘Exo Surveyor’ the 8 person crew were tasked with terra-scanning exoplanets within the reaches of our own galaxy.According to the scientific data of the time, their best chance of success laid with Kepler-186f, a larger, Earth-like planet in the Kepler system.  However, whilst enroute the crew were also tasked to explore two closer exoplanets and transmit their findings and data back to Earth. These additional distant worlds were: Kepler-16b and Trappist-1e.Their visionary work gave those back home a glimmer of hope in the darkest of times. ‘Transmissions of the Exo Surveyor’ provides a visual record of what these selfless explorers discovered during that pioneering expedition – a mission from which they were never destined to return.

Inspired by Nan Goldin "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" slideshow that I saw at Tate Modern, London September 2019.

I've made a slideshow with the images from when I was doing a interrail through Europe. All images were made with my to go camera, Canon AE-1 and a point and shoot that I bought in Budapest, HU and lost in Besanasdaçon, FR with a roll inside of it. I was on the road for 6 months, hitchhiking all the way from Turkey to my doorstep, Portugal. This slideshows for me is a homage to everyone that inspired me, traveled and helped me during my journey, much love for everyone!

The photographs showed here were captured with a compact point and shoot, during one night for friends and family were the main event was to exhibit the slideshow.
